Utility power is supplied to a broad range of customers as Alternating Current (AC) power. In the U.S. the AC power varies at 60 cycles per second (60 Hz). In Europe the AC power varies at 50 cycles per second (50 Hz).

In the U.S. the ideal case is that the AC power supplied, only has energy that is varying at 60 Hz. Any energy below and above 60 Hz, in general, is undesirable. This unwanted energy, which is mostly at frequencies higher than 60 Hz, is referred to as Dirty Electricity (DE). DE is a menace to technology and to humans.
